Situated at the foothills of Nanshan Mountain and 40 kilometers west of Sanya City, Dongtian Park was built in 1187 and enjoys a long history. It is the southernmost attraction themed around Taoism in China. It has been reputed as "the best scenic spot of Hainan Island over the past 800 years" for itsunique mixture of coastal scenery, mountains, rocks and caves. It is now one of the first national 5A-level scenic spots.
Sanya Dongtian Park has received countless celebrities through the years. In Tang Dynasty, the famous monk Jianzhen made six journeys and introduced Buddhism eastward to Japan. During his fifth journey, he arrived at this area and landed on the beach. In the late Song Dynasty and the early Yuan Dynasty, Huang Daopo, an ancestor and innovator of China’s textile technology has worked around the area, collecting cottons and weaving fabrics. She later started a sea voyage from here and spread the cotton-planting and textile technology of Yazhou around China and other countries. In Song Dynasty, Bai Yuchan, the founding father of Southern Taoism, has spent some time here to cultivate and refine himself and to deliver preaches, thus starting the bond between Dongtian Park and Taoism.
