Have you ever wondered how sea salt is produced? Even those who have lived next to the sea their whole lives are often unaware of the origin of this natural gift.
Yinggehai Salt Field is the largest salt field in Hainan Island, and second to none in southern China. It is located in the small town of Yinggehai, near Sanya. It would take around two hours to get there by car.
Yinggehai Salt Field is a must-visit place if you are planning a trip to Hainan with children of an older age. For sure, adults will find out a lot of fascinating facts about sea salt as well. In this video, follow the footsteps of our friend Chris on the exciting journey of salt production and collection!
Route: Visit the Sea Salt Culture Center → Experience salt collecting → Have a feast
Stop 1:
After his arrival in Yinggehai town, it would be quite informative to visit the Sea Salt Culture Center first to learn about salt production.
This is how Chris briefly describes the whole process of salt production:
“Here is where the sea water comes in, and it comes into a reservoir, <...> then the water goes through many steps. The salt in the water will get more and more concentrated with each step, and finally it comes down here where the salt crystallizes. <...> So after undergoing through many steps of evaporation, the salt water arrives here (to the salt field), where it is formed and where it is collected.”
We can also see the display of salt, which has gone through many years of change. It is called “Lao yan” in Chinese or “Old Salt”, and it’s a popular component of delicious refreshing fruit drinks in Hainan.
Stop 2:
The most exciting part of the journey is about to begin: the salt collecting itself! Put on your rubber boots and a bamboo hat and try your hand at salt collecting along with the locals! Learn by doing and feel the satisfaction of hard work.
Like Chris exclaimed, holding a handful of salt he had just collected:
“That’s what we worked for!”, which is very true.
Stop 3:
After the enjoyable but quite tiring work of salt collecting, it’s time to have a rest and try some delicious food made with sea salt, like salt-baked chicken (which “really is the main event!”), salt-baked eggs, and salt-baked shrimps. These dishes not only taste good, but salty food in moderation is actually good for your health and it can help with ailments. No doubt, it’s a perfect lunch!
