Sanya's Homestay Industry: The Road to "Seeking Knowledge Across Provinces"

2025-06-25

Recently, under the guidance of the Sanya Tourism, Culture, Radio, Television and Sports Bureau (Sanya Tourism and Culture Bureau), the Sanya Tourism Homestay Association organized an investment promotion and exchange delegation composed of principals from over 20 member units. The delegation traveled to Hangzhou, Moganshan, Zhoushan, and other locations to conduct investment promotion and exchange activities focused on the homestay cluster industry. Centered on the theme of "Integration, Innovation, Revitalization," the activity aimed to learn from the homestay cluster operation models, experience in integrating business formats, and policy empowerment mechanisms in the Zhejiang-Hangzhou-Zhoushan region. This initiative serves as a crucial step in implementing Sanya's Three-Year Action Plan for High-Quality Tourism Development (3+2 Model) (2024-2026).

"Seeking Knowledge Across Provinces": Practical Exploration from Individual Operation to Cluster Ecology

The delegation's first stop was the Siyanjing Homestay Cluster near West Lake in Hangzhou, where they gained in-depth understanding of the "Homestay + Scenic Area" operation model and management experience. At Shili Fangfei in the Xixi Wetland, they focused on researching the linkage model of "Ecological Resources + Homestay Industry," providing ideas for Sanya's integration of coastal resources. On June 16th, the delegation visited benchmark homestays in Moganshan, such as "Lost Villa" and "West Hills," experiencing firsthand the "B&B Cluster Effect." Diverse formats like cultural and creative parks converted from old factory buildings and library-themed homestays challenged the traditional perception of "homestays being merely accommodation." Their perfect integration of lodging and reading spaces created a strong cultural atmosphere, allowing guests to enjoy reading during their stay. This innovative "Accommodation + Culture" model is highly favored by consumers. Subsequently, the Sanya Tourism Homestay Association and the Moganshan Homestay Association signed a strategic cooperation agreement, establishing long-term cooperation mechanisms in areas such as industry resource sharing and joint homestay brand building.

During the exchange in Zhoushan, the team visited the Dongsha Homestay Cluster on Zhujiajian Island to learn experience in creating distinctive island homestays. They also reached cooperation intentions with the Zhoushan Homestay Association on topics such as integrating Buddhist culture with homestays and cross-regional tourist source linkage, building a resource connection bridge for Sanya homestays to "go global."

Policy Empowerment: Municipal Bureau Outlines Sanya Homestay Development "Roadmap"

During the exchanges in Hangzhou, Moganshan, and Zhoushan, the Sanya Tourism and Culture Bureau detailed Sanya's policy advantages to the delegation. Investing in and building distinctive homestays in Sanya not only allows access to government policy support but also leverages Sanya's rich tourism resources and unique cultural heritage to create competitive homestay brands. Furthermore, the Association stated it would provide comprehensive services to enterprises investing in Sanya, including assistance in site selection, planning and design, talent training, etc., to facilitate the smooth establishment of homestays in Sanya.

A relevant official from the Industry Section of the Sanya Tourism and Culture Bureau stated that Sanya will rely on the "Government Guidance, Association Platform, Enterprise Participation" mechanism to continue optimizing tourism industry reward and subsidy policies, activating two-way innovation in "Homestay +" and "+ Homestay". This activity, driven by both "Going Out" for exchange and "Bringing In" for investment promotion, aims to absorb the mature experience of the "B&B Cluster Effect" from Zhejiang, Hangzhou, and Zhoushan. Simultaneously, leveraging the policy advantages of the Hainan Free Trade Port, Sanya will focus on creating a distinctive Hainan Tropical Island Homestay Industry IP to attract more branded homestays to establish themselves in Sanya.

This exchange facilitated learning about Moganshan's "Cultural Tourism Enterprise + Association" collaboration mechanism and Zhoushan's "Island Homestay + Cultural Tourism IP" development model. The next step will involve promoting the integration of elements such as marine sports, family tourism, and intangible cultural heritage in areas like Bohou Village, Xidao Island, and Maling, forming a differentiated development pattern characterized by "one cluster, one distinctive feature."
